What is the Science behind Time Travel?

The concept of travelling through time to the past of to the future is in some respects somewhat of a fantasy extracted from a Sci-fi movie. However, scientists have looked further, and the idea of time travel is a controversial concept between scientists that elaborates the focus towards many theoretical theories’ studies. To enlighten the troubling, mind-boggling thought of the ability to time travel here are some thought-provoking time travel facts and theories.

The theory of General Relativity

The general theory of general relativity when first proposed by Albert Einstein which helped physicists’ theories about how time travel could exist. General relativity generalises special relativity and refines Newton’s law of universal gravitation, providing a unified description of gravity as a geometric property of space and time, or spacetime. In particular, the curvature of spacetime is directly related to the energy and momentum of whatever matter and radiation are present. The relation is specified by the Einstein field equations, a system of partial differential equations.

Wormholes

The progressive route to time travelling jumping through wormholes are a little sceptical as wormholes have not yet been proven to exist, however, scientists do believe they are there.

The idea is that wormholes are essentially a shortcut through space and time. Wormholes are posed to be so small that even a person could not fit through them. However, if they could be manipulated and controlled in size could propose the ability to travel through space much faster but to also travel through time. Currently, wormholes uphold strength as to the future possibilities of time travel.

Black Holes

Black Holes are areas in the universe with such strong gravity that not even light escapes. This could have been caused by a supernova or possibly the collision of stars. Physicists believe that everything that gets sucked into a black hole would never escape. In facts it is proposed that the gravity is so strong even time begins to become slow.

The idea presents itself that if you were to orbit a black hole without being sucked in time would become so slowed that years would flyby on earth. You would literally become vastly younger than someone the same age as you. In fact, some believe millions of years would pass by in just minutes, the earth may not even exist upon your arrival.

Speed of Light

The speed of light is the fastest anything can go, as far as we know. If something travels faster than the speed of light, the time for the object to reach its destination would come out to a negative number. Thus, theoretically, it would travel back in time.

The huge flaw in this theory is that nothing can go faster than the speed of light. Also, scientists researching this concept have found that there would have to be a variety of factors being met for this to work. Just travelling faster than the speed of light would not meet all of the factors necessary for time travel.

However, travelling at the speed of light may change the speed at which time exist, if you were to travel close to the speed of light surely the concept of time would become slow, 1 hour of travelling close to the speed of light would be the equivalent to years back on earth.

The grandfather Paradox

This theory is less about time travel and more about erasing yourself from existence altogether. If someone was able to travel to the past, it could cause a lot of harm to their future. Take the grandfather paradox, for example. Suppose you invent and build the time machine. Then, you travel back in time and meet your grandfather before he’s had any children. Then, for reasons unspecified, you kill him. Now, you would never have been born, and the time machine that got you back to the good old days was never built.

In many shows and movies, we have seen evil travelling back to the past to try and kill someone before they could do good in the future. This occurs in the movie The Terminator. As fascinating as time travel is, it would have a lot of repercussions if it were possible.

However, to combat the flaw of this paradox is the conceptual idea that your old timeline would still exist, travelling back just created a new timeline.

Hello, I am from the future!

The problem is that if the future of humanity is injected with the technology to time travel would we not already be meeting people from the future. Would we not be travelling back, the timeline would have already needed to exist and be a permanent existence, knowing the exact standpoint written into the exact permanence of time. Therefore, the concept to travel into the future seems to be more physically supported by the laws of physics.
